Trump Dismisses Musk’s New Political Party as ‘Ridiculous
U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Elon Musk over the tech billionaire’s recent move to start a new political party, calling the idea “ridiculous.”
Speaking to reporters on Sunday before boarding Air Force One, Trump said, “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion.”
Musk, who had hinted at the move for weeks, officially announced the creation of the America Party over the weekend on his social media platform X. According to Musk, the party aims to challenge what he calls the “Uniparty”—a term he uses to refer to both Republicans and Democrats.
Trump and Musk were once considered political allies. Musk previously headed a government task force called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which focused on reducing federal spending. He has also been vocal about his concerns over growing national debt.
In his post, Musk said the America Party’s main priority over the next year would be to influence congressional races in the House and Senate. He didn’t rule out backing a presidential candidate in the future.
Trump, however, didn’t hold back. On his Truth Social account, he wrote, “It’s sad to see Elon Musk going completely off the rails. He’s become a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Trump also criticized Musk’s support for a nationwide Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate, claiming it would have forced Americans to adopt electric cars rapidly. Trump said he had always been against that idea and pointed out that his latest tax and spending legislation, signed into law on July 4, eliminated tax breaks for EVs.
“People can now choose what kind of car they want—gas-powered, hybrids, or future tech,” Trump said. “There’s no more EV mandate.”
The new legislation boosts spending on border security, defense, and energy production but also includes controversial cuts to healthcare and food aid programs.
Musk’s announcement of the America Party comes amid an ongoing online feud with Trump, sparked by Musk’s frequent criticism of government spending under Trump’s leadership.
